Obituary of George Parlee

Mr. George Parlee of Campbell Street Apohaqui, passed away at Sussex Health Centre on January 21, 2004 at the age of 86. Born in Lower Millstream on June 29, 1917, George was the son of the late Abram and Sarah (Goddard) Parlee. George is survived by his wife Sarah (Sadie) nee -Wallace, his son Bev and his wife Linda of Apohaqui, 2 sisters; Olive Simpson and her husband Ernest of Keirstead Mt. and Louise Lockhart of Bathurst, 4 Grandchildren: Kim Cook and her husband John of Glens Falls NY, Heather Parlee of Truro, Alanna Tozer and her husband Brock of Ottawa, and Wallace Parlee of Apohaqui, 4 Great Grandchildren: Christine, Caitlin, and Caleb Cook and Colson Tozer, as well as several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brother, Nelson and by 5 sisters, Florence, Mabel, Charlotte, Dorothy and Lulu. During George's lifetime, he worked at a number of occupations starting out as a truck driver and mechanic for his fathers and in the mill at whatever job that needed to be filled. He worked in his brother's food store and served his country in the R.C.A.F. as an airframe mechanic 1943-1945. He then joined his brother in a lumbering operation, worked in the grocery store, and later as a meat cutter. In 1953, George and Sadie took over the operation of the store in Sussex. He became a trucker and saw mill owner in 1959 and in 1965 took over the operation of an Irving Service Station at Apohaqui. In 1966, he joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of America Local 2262 (Saint John, N.B.) as a Millwright and Machine Erector, working at Belldune, N.B. on the construction of the Smelter. George worked at various other construction jobs in the Maritime Provinces including Pulp and Paper Mills, Dover Flour, McCain Foods, Irving Refinery and Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant. Because construction work was not steady, in 1973 he and his son formed a company selling lawn and garden equipment, chain saws, etc. later building a Convenience Store, Take Out and Gas Bar operating until 1987 at which time George retired. George was instrumental in the building of the Apohaqui Community Hall and formation of the Boy Scout Group in the Village also helping with an out-door rink. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #76, Norton, The Apohaqui Seniors Club; The Kings County Historical Society and The Apohaqui Community Church serving as a Deacon & Treasurer for a number of years. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Thursday 2-4, 7-9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion Norton Branch # 76 will hold a tribute Thursday at 6:45pm The Funeral Service will be held from Apohaqui Community Church on Friday, January 23, 2004 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place at Trinity Cemetery in the spring.
