Obituary of Mildred Parlee
Mildred P. Parlee, of Apohaqui, N.B. passed away at Sussex Health Centre on January 14, 2004 at the age of 92. Born in Parleeville, N.B on December 15, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Roy S. and Bessie W. (Pickett) Parlee. Mildred is survived by four sisters, Lesley Mills of Sussex, Winnifred and her husband Ronald Brown of Anagance Ridge, Pauline and her husband George Chambers of Rockville, Norma and her husband Ralph Kelly of Riverview, a sister-in-law, Winnifred of Roachville, and many nephews and nieces. Mildred was predeceased by her three brothers, Rutherford, Donald, and Laurence, two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Mary and a brother-in-law, Laurence. Mildred received her early education in Parleeville and Apohaqui and attended Provincial Normal School, Fredericton to attain a Class I Teacher's License. She taught in several rural schools in southern New Brunswick, Lower Norton, Queenstown, Poodiac, Glen Falls, Bloomfield, Milford and Parleeville, interrupted by four years during World War II when she was employed by the Civil Service. At the time of her retirement in 1970 after 35 years of teaching, she was on the staff of the Sussex Elementary School, where she had been since 1954. (Many Sussex scholars will have fond memories of her instruction). In her later years she made her home in Dutch Valley, Kings Manor Sussex, and Scenic View Special Care Home, Roachville. Mildred attended St. Mark's Anglican Church, Sussex Corner where she was involved in many church activities. She was also a member of the Kings Co. Retired Teacher's Association, the N.B.T.A., Historical Society, the CNIB and the Kings Co. M.S. Society. For many years, she had foster children through Foster Parents Plan who gave her a great deal of pleasure by correspondence. Her former students often contacted her and her nephews and nieces recall many happy hours with 'Aunt Mimi'. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), with visitation on Thursday 2-4, 7-9. The Funeral Service will be held from St. Mark's Anglican Church on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 2:00 pm. with Rev. Allen Tapley officiating. Interment will take place at the Church of the Ascension Cemetery at a later date.
