Obituary of Donald James

Mr. Donald Charles Howell James, of 156 Schofield Road Summerville, NB passed away at Sussex Health Centre on June 4, 2003 at the age of 72. Donald James was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 8, 1930 to Eddie and Moira James. Donald grew up in a sports household, having a father who played football with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and later a brother, Gerry, who played both hockey and then football. As a young boy, Donald spent time with his Aunt Lillian on the James' family homestead in Charleswood and also with his grandmother on the FitzGerald farm in Grenfell, Saskatchewan. Donald had a keen interest in travel and set out on many adventures across the country and around the world. As a teenager, he spent weeks on horseback riding through the Rocky Mountains attending rodeos and playing the role of cowboy. He set off from Winnipeg with pennies in his pocket and traveled overseas on Merchant Navy ships to Russia and countries on the Baltic Sea. From England, he worked his way overland to Malaysia and took a boat to Australia where he cut cane; he worked on farms while exploring New Zealand. Don also traveled through countries such as Nepal, Iran, Iraq, Yugoslavia, India, Tibet and China, bringing home many souvenirs of his journeys and adventures. He wrote many articles documenting his experiences during his travels which were printed in Winnipeg newspapers. In England, while acting for the BBC and in various films, he met his wife Gillian. They were married in Niagara Falls, N.Y. in 1963 and set up home in Winnipeg. His son Simon was born in 1964, Samantha (in England) in 1965 and Stephen back in Winnipeg in 1967. He and his young family moved to B.C. in 1973 following a few months in England and Wales. Many people across the country followed the family's boxcar journey from B.C. to Sussex, N.B. where they bought the Dagnino Farm on the Millstream. His fourth child, Matthew, was born in Sussex in 1981. Donald always considered himself a Westerner but came to love the East and the farm he lived on. He and his wife raised cattle, donkeys and mules on what he referred to as the Great White North Donkey and Mule Company. He built a shop in which he enjoyed working with wood and building things for the house. He completely renovated the old house on the farm, adding a large veranda that the whole family enjoyed. Don and Gillian always had large vegetable gardens, and raised much of their own food. Donald loved to travel and would regal anyone who would listen with tales of his adventures. He was keenly interested in world affairs and was a frequent contributor to the CBC. Donald is survived by his wife Gillian, and his four children, Simon, Samantha, Stephen and Matthew as well as 12 grandchildren. At Don's request no visitation will be held. The Funeral Service is from Wallace Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 2:30 pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176).
