Obituary of Margaret Hayes

Margaret Hazel Hayes of Kiwanis Nursing Home, and formerly of Maple Ave. Sussex, passed away at the Kiwanis Nursing Home on April 27, 2003. Born in Mt. Pisgah, N.B. on February 25, 1915, Margaret was the daughter of the late James and Rose (Tingley) McCutcheon. She lived in Smith's Creek and went to school in a one room school. She loved to talk about her school days and how she walked to school in good weather and bad, her days on the farm and how many cows she milked everyday and that was by hand. She was hard working and worked two jobs to support her family; she worked for many years at the Sussex Hospital. When the fair came to town we would meet her at work and she would take us to the fair, this was a yearly event for a long time. When we were growing up we always had our chores to do after school, if they were not done by the time she got home, they were done for sure after she got home, even if they were outside chores and it was dark. When she spoke we knew she meant business. Her passion was gardening, she spent from early spring until late fall in her garden, planting plants that she started herself from seeds. From Christmas until late March she spent looking at her seed catalogue and planning her flower beds. Everybody in the neighborhood had bouquets of flowers and baskets of vegetables. She was often asked for bouquets for weddings. She was proud of the awards that she won from the Agriculture Society. She loved to go for drives in the country and especially Fundy Park where there were lots of flower beds. Each holiday was always made special for us as children with special treats and special gifts for Christmas and Birthdays. She has a lot of friends and she always made sure there was something special for them on their birthdays and Christmas. Her hobbies were reading, especially Westerns, and she read just about everyone written. She loved to knit mitts and socks for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When we were younger she was always at her sewing machine. She made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She had a great fascination for covered bridges and their history, and could tell you all about each covered bridge in Kings Co. She had a remarkable memory, she could remember all the little things we did as kids, good or bad. She loved ice cream and nobody could out eat her, her favorite was orange pineapple. She was truly a wonderful Mother and loved by all those who knew her. She is survived by her 5 daughters, Rose Davis and her husband Doug of Riverview, Leah Parlee of Moncton, Wilma MacDonald and her husband Gerald of Moncton, Heather Chase and her husband Karl of Bloomfield, Cherry Marchbank and her husband Ervine of Hampton, her brother, James (Ida) of Williams Lake, BC, and her 9 grandchildren; Margaret, James, Tracey, Corey, Andrew, Erika, Leanne, Gerry, Amanda, 4 great grandchildren; Austin, Kaylie, Haley and Connor, as well as several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176). At Margaret's request no visitation will be held. A Funeral Service will be held from Wallace Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 1:00 pm. There will be a time of fellowship with the family following the service. The Interment will take place at 3:00 pm in Gosline Cemetery, Knightville, NB.
