Obituary of Freda Ready
Mrs. Freda Vivian Ready, of Sussex, passed away at Sussex Health Centre on April 25, 2003, born in Cumberland Bay, NB on September 23, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Warren Granville and Della (Branscombe) Granville. Freda is survived by Lawrence, her beloved husband of 62 years, her daughter, Anne Hitchman of Fredericton, her son, Paul of Ottawa, as well as several cousins. Freda was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brother, Alvin in 1963 and by her sister Lola in 2002. Freda graduated from Provincial Normal School in 1932 and taught in many schools throughout Kings and Queens County. She was a former member of the New Brunswick Teachers Association. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Women's Institute and St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. In September 1936 Freda moved from her parents home in Cumberland Bay to take a contract to teach at the Mount Hebron School. She boarded with the Alfred Reidle family across the road from the school. At a dance in October of that year she first met Lawrence. After nearly a four-year period she and Lawrence were married on July 17, 1940 at St. Francis Xavier Church. On the same date fifty-years later, Father Tom Fowler celebrated their golden anniversary with the renewal of their marriage vows here at St. Francis Xavier Church. On the occasion of their 60th anniversary Father Fowler once again blessed their marriage at St. Philip's Church, Millstream. From 1940 to 1973, Freda and Lawrence lived on the Ready homestead in Mount Hebron. (Now the residence of Manfred and Brigitte Lambert). These early years were a busy period filled with much farm work, family times, and community events. It was from here that Freda built life long friendships with neighbours such as the Hornbrooks, Ryans, Heppells, Folkins, Lackies, Dykers, Chestnuts, Dunfields, Biggers, McEwens, Keys, Tubbs, and Desjardins. In the fall of 1962 Freda returned to teaching at the Mount Hebron School and remained there until the school was closed in June, 1970. That fall Freda joined the staff the Sussex Elementary School and taught Grade 2 there until she retired in June, 1979. Freda always enjoyed teaching and took pride in the accomplishments of her students and her reputation as a dedicated teacher. For the last 30 years Freda and Lawrence lived at their home on 77 Riverview Avenue. Freda enjoyed her retirement years by staying up late at night, sleeping-in, attending card parties, travelling to Regina, attending church suppers, visiting, shopping for bargains, and cooking big meals to entertain family and friends. It was in the fall of 2002 that Freda accepted that she could no longer enjoy going to her Monday afternoon Bridge Parties. Freda always asked that God allow her to keep her senses in her old age - and this was fully granted. While her health gradually declined in recent years, her mind remained keen and active until the end. At night, when she could not sleep, she continued to challenge her mind by working at crossword puzzles. Even on the day she passed away, she wrote a reminder note to ensure sure that a donation be made to the Cumberland Point Cemetery, the burial site of her mother, father, brother, and many other family ancestors. Arrangements in care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), with visitation on Saturday 7-9, Sunday 2-4, 7-9. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Francis Xavier RC Church on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 11:00 am. with Fr. Peter Bagley officiating. Internment will take place at Wards Creek Cemetery. There will be a time of fellowship with the family following the committal service in the St. Francis Xavier Church Hall. The deepest sympathy of the staff of Wallace Funeral Home is extended to Lawrence, Paul and Anne and to all family members and friends at this time of great loss.
