Obituary of Roger Smith

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Roger Leonard Smith, announce his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 47. Roger passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 with his wife Darlene by his side. Roger was the youngest of seven children. He was the son of Lillian (Southgate) Smith of the Kiwanis Nursing Home and the late Everett Smith who passed away in 1987. Roger graduated from Sussex Regional High School in 1983. He then went on to College to complete the Welding Program and later becoming part of the Pipefitting/Plumbing apprenticeship program. Roger had various jobs throughout his life. When Roger put his mind to something he was always good at it. He never liked being told what to do by anyone, other than his daughter Joy. Roger met Darlene when he moved out west and stayed at her father's boarding house. She would tease him about always overloading the washing machine and eventually, they fell in love. Darlene remembers how proud he was when he first saw his daughter Joy, amazed she said. Roger lived his life as he chose to live it. He loved his family with a passion and this is the legacy he leaves behind. No matter what the day turned out to be, Roger was always true to himself. There were many days when Roger was sick that he would still have a smile on his face. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his wife Darlene; his mother Lillian Smith of Sussex; his daughter Joy; his sister Joy and her husband Donnie of Apohaqui; his brothers Stephen, Gerry, Paul and his wife Debbie, and Randy, all of Sussex; his nephews Jeb McLaughlin of Sussex Doug Wark (Paulette LaFave) of Nova Scotia, David Wark (Charity) of Sussex, Matthew Brown of Fredericton, Lucas Brown of Moncton and Jeremy Smith of Sussex; his nieces, Crystal Gray and her husband Pat of Sussex, Misty Kabanuk and Michael and Melissa Mickla and Mike, both from Alberta as well as his great friend, who was more like a brother, Scott (Scooter) Boyd. Roger is predeceased by his father Everett Smith and his sister Starr. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176). To respect Roger's wishes, no visitation will be held. A Celebration of Roger's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 2:00pm. As an expression of sympathy donations made to the Living Memorial would be appreciated by the family.
