Bob, I keep asking myself why did this happen to you? You walked down a road none of us should have to go down, a 10 year battle with cancer is no picnic in the park. I have no answer as to why, I can only speculate maybe because you're one of the toughest guys I've ever known mentally and physical. A sense of humor that could shrug off any impossible situation, a well above average IQ to understand what this disease was all about and an integrity to stand up to it and fight it till the very end. If this were a Hollywood film it would of turned out different, but it's not Hollywood it's real life, it didn't turn out well for you or for the people that have left notes here for you, or your family. Bob, you made us extremely proud the way you battled, I will never complain about getting up early for work again. Bob was a Albert Co. boy, safe to say he's a King's Co. boy now, rooted in the Kennebbecassis River Valley just around Portage Vale. I remember Bob and I took a motorbike ride one Thanksgiving Sunday thru the Old Couch Rd. in the hills of Portage and made our way just shy of Annagance. There was a beautiful lookout just in back of a green hunter's camp visible from the Portage Vale Rd., we stopped turned our bikes off, looked out at the river valley with the leaves turning - it was absolutely beautiful. Bob I couldn't ask for a better friend, keep care of that river. I'm going to have a beer with you at that look out one day. Thanks for the many memories I will never forget them, I wish I could of said so long to you, I will say it now so long friend. God Bless You and drop me a line every now and then so I know you're alright. My condolences to Natalie,Eva, Mr. and Mrs. Smidt, John and Susan and extended family. Sincerely, Rod In Victoria.

We are so sorry to hear about your loss. We met Rob in Halifax when he had his transplant and Roaul( my husband) had just completed his transplant. We immediately hit it off and a long distant friendship was born.Rob & Nat came to Neguac to our cottage and Rob went on a fishing trip with Raoul on private waters. They were both very happy when they got back to the cottage for supper.Rob sure loved to fish, his eyes were all a sparkle when he was telling us about his day. He caught a big one,a real big one, the stories of a true fisherman. We will be thinking of Rob's family tomorrow during service hours and our prayers are with you. Gone but never forgotten. We are deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Bob was a true free-spirit, with a great heart. I was lucky enough to know Bob, and will miss his laugh, and his smile; One of my fondest memories is when Bob, Rod, Kurt & I went to BB King in Dartmouth, years ago. Bob, you made me laugh that night like I have never laughed before, or since! Brother, its Willy here. I am thinking about you right now. We had so much fun we had as youngsters, riding dirt bikes, hitch hiking from Riverview to Penobsquis, camping in Martin Head. Your mom and dad were always friendly when I came to visit you. You were a loving and caring individual, who had no enemies. It was in April of 2003, when I last saw you and I knew you were battling cancer. Yet you jumped into your dads dune buggy and commented on how nice the trees looked, how nice the river flowed etc. You sure did appreciate life Bob. I took a lesson to slow down, smell the flowers and appreciate what we have. Life is a gift and I want to thank you for being such a wonderful friend and buddy. God bless you Bob. Hello Smidt family, I am so sorry for your loss. Bob meant a great deal to a lot of people. I know he was special to the Petty family. Even though I didn't see Bob much over the past few years, I have many fond memories of him from my younger years. He was the one who taught me how to be fearless on my motorbike, and how to do the perfect wheely! I was also lucky enough to walk down the aisle with this handsome man at my brother's wedding.
