They are too numerous to pick just one, so I would like to share a few. When I was young and going to school, the bus would stop at the bottom of the hill. Whenever gram would come for visits, she would meet me at the bus stop. As we walked up the hill to the house, this was our special time. Heaven only knows what we talked about on the walk home, however, this was the beginning of our many heart to hearts.
A week before Halloween, when I was eight and gram was visiting,mom and dad went to town. I climbed up the cupboard, where the candy was hid and got down the bubble gum. Looking back now, I'm sure the gum stuck to gram's false teeth. She didn't complain about the gum and we never told mom and dad what we got up to while they were out.
Traditions, every family has them. One of gram's was knitting socks for my dad at christmas. In 2000, when my father passed away, it seemed to leave an empty void for gram. Instead of dropping a tradition, which gave gram joy in doing, we decided it should be carried on. That christmas she gave me dad's unfinished pair of socks and that was the beginning of our sock tradition.
When I moved home from Alberta in 2003, at that point in time I was feeling pretty low about my life. Gram and Leroy opened their home, no matter what time, day or night. They always seemed happy to see me. We had a lot of heart to hearts at the kitchen table, over a cup of tea. That sometimes ended up turning into breakfast.
Whether it's been a partner in a bubble gum crime, going for a walk, continuing a tradition or having a cup of tea and a shoulder to cry on, you've always been there Gram. Thanks for the laughs, tears and memories. Most importantly, thanks for being there when I always needed you.
