Obituary of Harvey Briggs
Harvey was born in Drury's Cove on October 28, 1926, he was the son of the late James A. Briggs and Gertrude M. Hutchinson. and the husband of the late Shirley (Nelson) who passed away in 1992.
At a very young age Harvey was diagnosed with the bone crippling disease, Osteomyelitis and as a result spent many years of his childhood at the Shriner's Hospital for Sick Children in Montreal. He would often tell us stories of his time spent there; he was later made an honorary member for his contributions to the Shrine.
Through hard work, determination, a little luck, a lot of love and respect from his wife and children, Dad was able to accomplish almost anything he set his mind to, from building a house for his family to building toys for his grandchildren to whittling out a lift for his boot. He was a man with numerous talents and over the years had worked at many different jobs from lumber camps to construction, and then driving a school bus where he left lasting impressions on many of the students he hauled during the 22 years until he retired in 1988 because of failing health.
He was an avid horse lover and over the years had acquired a large collection of pictures and books or just anything horse related, including his collection of harness which he spent many hours polishing, repairing or building something for it. His favorite breed of course was the Belgian draft which he still had. He would often make a special trip to the grocery store for a bag of carrots to give to them and when they heard his truck coming through the field or up the driveway they knew there was a treat for them so they would meet him at the edge of the pasture.
Harvey was a proud man who after losing Mom, the love of his life continued to live on his own and stay independent. He was always willing to lend a hand or just listen and usually give an opinion whether you wanted it or not. His biggest joy came from the visits and phone calls or listening to stories about his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When you called or stopped in he was always asking or talking about them and you could see his face light up.
Harvey, Uncle Harvey, Dad, Grampie, Great Grampie or Big Grampie, it did not matter the name because to those who knew and loved him he was a role model and a true friend. Teaching us all that perseverance comes in all sizes and all walks of life. Dad will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.
Harvey will continue to live on in the hearts of his three daughters; Donna Elliott and husband Paul of Petitcodiac; Gail Pearson and husband Kevin of Picadilly; Heather Briggs and partner Kathy McKillop of Garnet Settlement; one son; Dana Briggs and wife Shelley of Apohaqui; seven grandchildren; Christine (Elliott) McCoy (David) of San Clemente, California, Jennifer Elliott of Brampton, Ontario, Scott Pearson (Tracey Almon) of Sussex Corner, Tyler Pearson (Lacey Doyle) of Apohaqui, Colton Briggs (Jessica Knox) of White Court, Alberta, Danielle Briggs of Riverview and Callie Briggs of Apohaqui; four beloved great grandchildren; Vanessa and Wesley of Brampton and Daniel and Courtney of Sussex Corner; two special nieces; Sandra Rickard of Rothesay and Patricia Garber of Spring Valley, California and by many other nieces and nephews.
