Obituary of Ernest Gowlett
Ernie was born in Yorkshire, England on June 8th, 1922. He was the son of George and Martha (Scott) Gowlett.
He and his family moved to Canada when he was five years old, they landed in Quebec and came by train to Sussex. He grew up in tough times, his family made several moves from Keirstead Mountain to Sussex and from there out to Wards Creek. Ernie left school in Grade 7 to go to work. He earned 2.00 each week plus board working on a farm. He then left the farm to work in a saw mill and when WWII broke out, he joined the Army.
He served overseas for two years with the army service corps as an ambulance driver. Following the war he and Hazel ran a farm in Wards Creek for a few years, until they it in 1950 and moved to Plumweseep. Ernie found work in Sussex at Sussex Motors where his boss was looking for someone to repair chain saws. He offered the job to Ernie and in 1958, Ernie went on to start his own business where he became "Chain Saw Ernie" and that business went on for over thirty years, when he retired in 1989.
Ernie wasn't ready to slow down; He served with the militia for a good number of years eventually becoming a chief warrant officer. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 in 1954 and served on many committees, was branch president in 1965 and again in 1992, he was a zone commander, deputy district commander and district commander, chairman for provincial curling and instrumental in holding the associations national curling championship in Sussex in 1975 and a provincial bonspiel in 1985.
Ernie was a life member and was given it Meritorious Service Medal which is the highest medal to be awarded by the legion except the Palm Leaf, which he received the following year. The Palm Leaf is issued by the dominion command and can only be awarded once. This award was given in recognition of his work as chairman of the 50th anniversary VE-Day. The legion's meritorious medal is given for years of service over and above the call of duty.
Ernie was the chairman for the Sussex Fall Fair for fifteen years and involved with the fair for 20 years. He worked on the committee for the senior friendship games and was the first vice president of the seniors Keeping Young Club in Apohaqui. He was also the treasurer for Dairy Zone for seniors.
A motor home enthusiast, he was a director of a motor home club and helped organize the caravans for travel. Ernie always said "If anyone says that when you retire, you have nothing to do, I say, go back to work so you'll have time to yourself."
Ernie loved his family, his community and his country. He worked tirelessly for all three and he will be missed.
Ernest will live on in the hearts of his wife Carrie Gowlett, three daughters: Mary Boyd of Sussex, Geraldine Gowlett of Sussex and Joan Tays and her husband Ronnie of Passekeag; two sons: George and his wife Joan of Bloomfield and Bryant and his wife Wanda of Sussex; three step daughters: Eunice Keirstead of Charlottetown, PEI, Susan Brooks of Sussex Corner, Brenda Lee Bartlett of Sussex.
His 28 grandchildren: Tina Steeves and her husband Richard, Clayton Gowlett (Charlene), Ernie Jesso (Karen Hayward), Patrick Beach, and his wife Rebecca, Amanda Bizeau and her husband Nathan, Laura Lee Gowlett, John Gowlett and his wife Shelly, Scott Gowlett and his wife Melissa, Randy Gowlett and his wife Bonnie, Russell Tays, Christian Gowlett, Shelby Gowlett, Carl Walsh and his wife Margie, Teddy Walsh (Kammie), Kathy Keirstead and her husband Randy, Clayton Keirstead and his wife Lori, Lloyd Keirstead and his wife Gena, Sally Miller and her husband Tommy, Randy Keirstead (Judy Ore), Tina Vessey and her husband Michael, Michelle Brooks (Randy Buchanan), Tiffany Brooks, Cody Brooks, Devon Brooks, Stephanie Coneen (Steve), William Coneen (Michelle Gerdis), Kyle Coneen, and Rebecca Coneen.
His 44 great grandchildren: Madison Marie Lowen and her husband Justin, Cody Lee, Emma, Gabriel, Genevieve,Tobias, Lindsay, Jasmine, Bailey, Taylor, Summer, Cassie, Julian, Monica Lambert , Katelyn, Sarah, Spencer, Jack Lockhart, Samantha, Keisha, Katelyn (Dale), Kaley, Ryan, Jordan, Adam, Megan, Amanda, Kevin, Brandon, Gabbey, Matthew, Allison, Justine, Derian, Riley, Celeste, Nigel, Ivy, Skylar and Kassandra.
His four great great grandchildren: Valerie, Hailey, Nevaeh and Jack; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ernest Gowlett of Sussex passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on November 5, 2013 at the age of 91. He is predeceased by his first wife Hazel Ann (Lewis) Gowlett who passed away in 1987 and by his brother Frank, two sons Freeman and Stanley, two daughters Beulah and Florence, two sisters: Joyce Manley and Joan Harling and by his son-in-law Robert Boyd.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Salvation Army Community Church, Sussex on Thursday from 1-3 and 6-8pm.
A service celebrating Ernie's life will be held from Salvation Army Community Church on Friday morning at 10:00. The Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 will hold a tribute immediately following the service.
A private family interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will rejoin everyone for a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 on Magnolia Ave.
Due to allergies, the family has recommended silk flowers or donations to the Poppy Fund
