Gerry, Andrew, Rodney and Mike (and families). So sorry to hear about Ernie's passing. He was such a kind, calm man and a proud father and grandfather. I remember seeing him singing in the church choir, thinking it was nice that he and Gerry enjoyed that activity together. It is a blessing that you had many years together to raise a great (and active) family, and to support them, and your grandchildren, in their various sports and activities. Cherish the memories. To Gerry and family. I am one of the many farm kids who were fortunate enough to have Ernie Eagles as our 4-H leader. When Ernie arrived in our area he was young and so handsome, energetic, enthusiastic, fun ... and always encouraging and caring. Of course we all adored him. Our heartfelt sympathay to Gerry, and Andrew, Rodney and Mike and their respective families. I remember fondly my many interactions with Ernie, during my childhood and then later in life as an adult. Ernie was involved with many hockey and baseball teams, a few of which I had the good fortune to be a part of. Ernie was always generous with his time, whether it was helping someone tie their skates, or teaching a beginner on a minor baseball team how to lay down a bunt. Whatever it was, Ernie was there. He had a generous heart and was always willing to help out. But just as important, when we were away from the rink or off the field, Ernie was a man who we as boys always respected and looked up to, and later in life as adults, we admired. I will always remember Ernie in Church, particularily in the Choir and in Sunday School. I wish I could be at the Service today, but unfortunatley I am unable to. Dear Aunt Gerry, Andrew & Marilyn, Rodney & Tracey, Michael & Anne Marie & Family We are thinking of you as you prepare to honour Uncle Ernie at the service tomorrow. Just over six years ago after my Dad's (Basil's) service, I questioned Uncle Ernie about a story Dad used to tell us kids. He mentioned how when he was growing up on the farm in Monteagle a couple of the brothers decided to torment their mother by bringing a horse into the kitchen. Uncle Ernie confirmed this story to be true and provided the names of two of his brothers. When I asked how on earth could they get a horse into the farmhouse kitchen he said they brought the horse in through the wood shed. We had a good chuckle as one of the said brothers walked by, still with a twinkle in his eye. Thank you for sharing the family photos. I often had a chance to talk to Ernie when he was in the store, because he usually came to the Pharmacy for me to ring in his paper when he did not want to wait in the "regular" line-up. Gerry, Andrew, Rodney, Michael and families. My condolences go to the entire extended family. I have so many fond memories of Ernie when I was a young boy growing up in Sussex. He never missed any of his sons hockey games. If he was not on the bench or in the dressing room you would be sure to spot him up in the stands keeping stats (face-offs won, hits, shots on goal etc.) I remember him being soft spoken yet passionate about the game of hockey. Win or lose his demeanor was always calm and he never spoke an ill word of any player, coach, official or other parent. Ernie was a pretty good baseball coach as well. I remember him teaching us how to read baseball signs. A sign to steal, bunt or hit away, as young boys at the time we thought that was pretty cool and that we must be just one step away from the major leagues. I remember the annual corn boils at the Eagles house. All the boys invited and, for some of us, a competition to see who could eat the most. Thinking of you all during this difficult time. Gerry, Mike, Rodney & Andrew Sincerest condolences on the passing of Ernie, and special thanks to Mike for your call. Ernie was so good to us and we owe all our successes to him and his mentoring. As young farmers we figured we knew it all, but thinking back we knew nothing. Ernie was there to help us in many ways, including how to make hay, register calves, pick corn kernels out of our young daughters nose, pick out nice Guernsey heifers to show (this cost him a badly broken leg), and of course all the help showing the Guernseys here and at the Royal. Even after retirement he still made time every year to visit us and those visits were very much appreciated and enjoyed. As you will, Sarah and I will miss him, and all our children asked me to pass on their condolences as well.
