Obituary of Ernest Eagles

Ernie Eagles was born and raised on a dairy farm in Monteagle, NB on December 2, 1928; he was the son of the late Edgar Gordon Eagles of Monteagle and Ella Pearl (Taylor) of Salisbury. Ernie was the youngest of 10 children and like so many of his contemporaries he attended a one room school house up the road for grades 1-8. The next year Ernie had quite a distance to go to school in Salisbury so he often tried to get a lift on the milk wagon. Ernie was a quick thinker, as a teenager he was on his way home from school when his friend went through the ice in a failed river crossing; he ran down river and was able to pull him out at the next open spot. Ernie learned to skate at a young age on an outdoor rink by the church. He attended Sunday school and young people's meetings at Second North River Baptist Church. He graduated from Salisbury High School in 1948, and worked in the woods before going on to post-secondary education at NSAC graduating in 1950 and then graduated with a BSc from MacDonald College in 1952. While at MacDonald College he played varsity football and continued to football in Moncton. In 1957, Ernie met Geraldine Constantine from Dobson's Corner, the daughter of Reade and Lavina (Rogers) Constantine; they were later wed on July 31st, 1959 in the United Baptist Church Parsonage in Salisbury. To this day, they live, loved and raised their family together in Sussex. Ernie worked for the Department of Agriculture for 39 years before retiring in 1991. In his early career, he was very involved with the organization of 4H clubs as part of his job. He was instrumental in the program driving the young people to wherever they needed to be. He had a tremendous passion for his work and loved to spend time on the farms with the people he served, friends and relatives. He was a former President of the Canadian Guernsey Association and he actively helped in the showing and preparing of the animals for shows and exhibitions including the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. He was a man of impeccable character whose priorities were his family, faith and the giving to others. He was actively involved in the Sussex United Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir. Ernie also love quartet singing and sang with a Quartet out of Moncton. He also golfed, curled and played badminton but gave them up when the boys were born. He played some Men's League hockey at the old Kings County Stadium. Ernie and Gerry enjoyed bowling and the boys were always impressed by the number of bowling trophies at the house. Ernie and Gerry moved into town from Sussex Corner in the summer of 1967. He became very involved in minor sports as his sons began playing hockey and baseball as well as volunteering for whatever needed done. He coached a lot of baseball, winning the Provincial Beaver Baseball Championships in 1976. He also coached the intermediate baseball team starting in 1978 after the senior team and minor baseball shut down in town. A field was later named after him in appreciation of his contribution to minor baseball. Ernie enjoyed cribbage with his friends at the golf club and was an avid sports fan; especially hockey, baseball, golf and curling. He loved his vegetable garden, which was quite large, he had his boys gardening their own plot as part of the 4H program; they didn't quite enjoy it as much as he did. As his son's grew older and played on travel teams Ernie would drive anywhere and everywhere to make sure everyone got to their game. He also coached a Bantam C rep hockey team. He continued to coach Atom hockey after his sons left home. With the boys off to school and their careers he restarted golfing and curling, with Gerry not far behind and possibly even more passionate about both sports. As a grandparent he traveled around the world to spend time with his children and grandchildren. Melville, Kitchener, Quebec, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Australia, Dalhousie, Washington DC, Concord NH, Moncton, Quispamsis, Wolfville and Fredericton were all destinations for family visits. He loved to see his grandchildren play sports and perform in the fine arts. The last few years he has slowed down a bit and was unable to play golf or curl on a regular basis but he loved to go to the golf course in the mornings to play crib and joke with his friends. Ernie and Gerry have three sons: Andrew and his wife Marilyn Mortlock-Eagles of Israel and Vancouver, BC, Rodney and his wife Tracey of Quispamsis and Michael and his wife Anne Marie Allain-Eagles of Fredericton; seven grandchildren; Ryan and Erin; Adam, Jared and Emma; Matthew and Christopher: three step grandchildren; Renee and her husband Dillon, Mark and his wife Anne-Marie and Zachary: and three step great grandchildren; Avery, Dane and Justin. He is also survived by his brother: Gordon Eagles and his wife Hazel of Salisbury Rd., his sister, Ruth Steves of Charlottetown; his sisters-in-law, Beulah Eagles of Kelowna, as well as by several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ernest Andrew Eagles of Sussex NB, passed away on Friday, May 2nd at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 85. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings: Basil and his wife Edna, Lawrence and his wife Anne, Audrey Loftus and her husband Alfred, Gesner and his wife Eileen, Nelson, Francis and Bertha.
