Obituary of Jane Elizabeth Wood
Jane was born and raised in Knightville on May 28, 1939 on her parents Sanford and Bertha Almon’s farm. The fourth of eight children her childhood and early teenage years were spent with her siblings helping on the farm and attending school in the one room schoolhouse on her road. Leaving the area in her teens she ventured forth to Saint John and found work keeping house while she continued her education.
She decided to pursue an opportunity to become a Nursing Assistant and moved to Halifax to take courses in that field, and eventually received her certification as a Nursing Assistant. She met and married a young sailor in the Canadian Navy, Claude Lapointe. They settled in Dartmouth to raise their family. She was active in many of the Armed Forces organizations, and also took on roles in the Catholic Women’s League and as a Catechism teacher in the local schools.
Jane was a diligent worker and often held two jobs at the same time. A strong work ethic and appreciation for the bounty of life were central to her beliefs. She cultivated many friendly acquaintances and a few very close friends who she remained close to throughout her life. She was possessed of a dry sense of humour and loved being surrounded by friends and family for gatherings with much conversation and laughter.
She had three sons, Thomas, Emile, and Charles. She lost her eldest son in a vehicular collision. She would eventually have three grandchildren Cara, Daniel and Thomas, and one great grandchild Taylor. Each one holding a special place in her heart, and each one proudly spoken of by her. Jane always had a penchant for any young children, and would become animated in their presence. She was a devoted and loving Mother and Grandmother to her own, and second mother to all for the price of a kiss and a hug.
When her husband Claude passed away she relocated for a few years to Fort McMurray to be near her two sons and their families. It was there that she met the love of her life Richard Wood. They married and relocated to her early surroundings in Sussex Corner. They settled into the community and became a fixture at local music jams, the golf club, and Legion. Reconnecting with family and friends she stayed active and enjoyed her retirement.
Those who knew the private Jane knew her as a fiercely loyal person gifted with a strong determination. This was paired with her great sense of humour. Laughing with her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends was her greatest sense of enjoyment.
Jane will be lovingly remembered by her husband Richard Wood of Sussex Corner; her sons: Emile Lapointe (Flora) and Chuck Lapointe (Liana), both of Fort McMurray; her grandchildren: Cara Todd (Casey Henneberry), Daniel Young-Lapointe and Thomas Lapointe; her great grandson Taylor Henneberry; her brothers: Doug of Penobsquis, Ralph of Knightville and Clifford (Nancy) of Sussex; her sister, Louise Howe of Sussex Corner; her sister-in-law, Joanne Almon of Saint John; as well as several nieces and nephews.
