Obituary of Douglas Sutherland Norrad

Mr. Douglas Sutherland Norrad was born on June 16, 1918 in Halifax, NS to Willard and Helen (Sutherland) Norrad. He was the husband of the late Lenora "Norrie" (Kyle) Norrad. He was proud to celebrate his 97th birthday just short of a month before his passing on July 13, 2015. He moved to Sussex approximately in 1922 where he lived out the rest of his life. Doug was a World War Two Veteran where he served in the Army with the 4th Princess Louise Dragon Guards. He received many service decorations and wore them proudly each Remembrance Day. After the war ended he joined his father, Willard (Pop), and worked along side him at Norrad's express eventually taking over the business after his father died in 1978. His son Peter holds the reins now but Doug kept a pretty close eye on things up until he was no longer physically able to get out to that little office and supervise. He was a member of the Sussex Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Lion's Club, and the Sussex Golf and Curling Club. He loved sports on TV especially hockey, baseball, and even golf. He enjoyed attending his son and grandson's hockey and baseball games as well. He had a special love for all animals and pets were certainly spoiled in his house. He was fortunate to enjoy good health until the last three years; following a series of strokes but was able to remain in his home surrounded by his loving family and caregivers, until he passed. Doug is survived by his children: Barb Webster of Sussex, Connie Munson and her husband Brian of Prince Rupert, BC and Peter Norrad and his wife Tammy of Sussex Corner; his grandchildren: Becky Webster, Cheryl Brisebois and her husband Marc, Aaron Munson and his girlfriend Kira, and Brett and Marcus Norrad; his great grandchildren: Nicole Zacharuk, Kaylee Webster and Ben and Alex Brisebois; his sister, Zola "Timmy" Price of Fredericton and Judy Huggard of Saint John; his brothers: Ralph Norrad of Fredericton and Donald "Red" and his wife Ila of Florida; his brother-in-law, Mitch Scott; his special sister-in-law, Christina Sprague(Teenie); as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his wife and parents; Doug is predeceased by his daughter, Kathy Norrad; his sister, Lona "Teet" Scott; his brothers: Harold (Helen), Gordon "Dode" (Betty) and Richard "Dick" (Corine), Murray (Madge); his infant sister, Doris; his brother-in-law, Paul Huggard; and by his sisters-in-law, Verna Norrad (Fredericton) and Verna Norrad (Sussex). With the passing of his wife Norrie in 1984 and later his daughter Kathy in 2004, he had many years where he could have been alone but that was not to be. He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren and dogs and enjoyed every bit of all the great care and attention he was so well deserving of. He will be greatly missed. How will we ever remember all those old poems and jokes? We will just try our best and remember him with a smile and chuckle or two as he would have wanted. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Friday from 1-3 and 6-8pm. The Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 will hold a tribute Friday evening at 5:45. A Celebration of Doug's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on July 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm. If you are considering making a memorial donation the family has recommended the Sussex Extra Mural, Dairytown Veterinarian Clinic or donor's choice.
