Obituary of William Herbert Leland
Bill was born in St. Stephen on March 11, 1938, he was the son of the late Edwin Snell and Goldie Mae (Nason). When Bill was about 12 years old his mother married Hugh Leland who became the father figure in Bill's life.
Bill was a graduate of NB Teacher's College, St. Thomas University, and UNB Fredericton where he was enrolled in COTC as an army lieutenant. Bill was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman. He played hockey at university and provincial levels, and coached high school (Sussex Sonics) and minor league hockey. He was a former member of the Sussex Golf and Curling Club, the Algonquin Golf Club in St. Andrews, and a strong supporter of NBTA Teacher's Curling. He was involved with Scouts Canada for a number of years as a Beaver leader as well as a member of the Sussex Art Club. Bill was a member of both the Royal Canadian Legion, Sussex Branch #20 as well as the St. Stephen Branch #9, totaling almost 45 years of volunteer service.
Bill is survived by his wife Ann Leland, three sons: Michael and his wife Kim of Moncton; Brian and his wife Brooke of Toronto and David and his wife Amanda of Guelph; his brother Rev. James Leland and his wife Nora of Kemptville, ON, his sister, Aldana Babcock of Oak Bay, three half brothers: Edward Snell and his wife Liz of Toronto, Peter Snell and his wife Carol of Tweed, ON, and Chris Snell and his wife Olga of England; his half sister Trish and her husband David of Portland, Oregon, two grandchildren: Jason and Rachel; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
William Herbert Leland of Sussex, passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on August 12, 2015 at the age of 77.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7pm.
The Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 will hold a tribute honouring Bill on Monday evening at 7:00pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 11:00 am.
