I had a pleasure of knowing Derek for over 30 years. We first met the Tae Kwon Do class he ran in Sussex. Derek was committed to teaching his students and was an excellent instructor. Derek and I had common goals. We both worked as auxiliary members with the Sussex Town Police, then the Atlantic Police Academy and then back as full time members with the Sussex Town Police and eventually the RCMP. Derek was an exellent person, family man and a committed police officer, a class act with a incredible sense of humor. Derek could always be relied on at work and personal advice. Derek will be missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to Tammy and Ann and members of the Danells family. Rest in peace Derek. Willy, Vanessa and Andrew.

Our condolences to you all. Const. Danells was a very admirable man. We only knew him through the years 1986-1991 when he was an instructor at Tai Kwon Do. To Derek's family,
I had the pleasure of working with Derek from the time he joined the RCMP and more so when Sussex became part of District 3 with Hampton. I worked in Hampton and Derek always took the time to stop at my desk and chat when he was at the office. Derek was the "epitome" of the perfect cop or police officer. He was hard knock when he had to be, compassionate when needed and dedicated. He loved his community, more so he loved his family. I learned of Derek being in the hospital when my son was in a serious motor vehicle Accident October 1st. I visited him in SJ and we had a great chat, he was joking with the nurse and in good spirits. The next time I saw him was in the Sussex hospital in early December. He was more concerned about my son than himself. Of course, we did talk politics as we always did on his visits to my office. I am glad I took the time to visit him, I knew it would likely be the last time I would see him as he had failed since my last visit. I loved Derek as not just a co-worker but I considered him a friend. I am deeply sorry for your loss. A good man gone too soon. I am pleased to make a donation in Derek's memory to Victim Services. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I,m so sorry ann and tammy and family your dad was a great man no matter where I seen him he always made me laugh once he put his siren on and stopped my taxi I thought I was speeding he walked up to my car and asked me to get out of the car ,,after I got out he said give me a cigarette and said now stand here and have one with me ,,,I had a lot of laughs with him and a lot of enjoyable trips to saint john carol and I went to bingo he went to karate,, I will miss him as you will but keep your chin up I,ll bet you have some real duesers of stories and memories keep them in your heart and speak of him often,,all my love and prayers going out to yous,,if there is anything I can do call on me even if its only something small I am here ,,

I was sadden to hear of " Sir's" passing. He is responsible for me obtaining my black belt. When he was teaching martial arts he thought more of helping all of his students reach their goals than reaching his own. He helped me go from blue to black belt.
Anyone who has reached degrees at the black belt level is called sir
