Upon graduating from the Sussex High School in 1972, Doug worked at various jobs before becoming a paramedic in 1975 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, where he worked for 32 years before retiring in 2007. He was an avid deer hunter, both with bow and rifle. He enjoyed competition hunting, with the many hounds he had over the years and traveling to various competition events, both in the Maritimes and the US. He was a life member of the New Brunswick Coon & Cat Hunter's Association, where he held various positions over the years, including president, membership chairman, secretary, treasurer and Master of Hounds.
