Obituary of Darrell Frederick Chase

Rev. Darrell Chase was born in Marysville on May 26, 1930. He was the son of the late J. Miles and Lulu Chase. Their house was a typical country home of that era with no electricity and no indoor plumbing. Instead, they had kerosene lamps and a small 2-hole facility behind the house. Miles worked at what jobs he could get and felt fortunate if he could bring home twenty dollars a week. They got most of their eggs, milk and meat from the next-door neighbor. The other grocery needs were delivered to the door by Manzer’s delivery wagon in the summer and sleigh in the winter months. Darrell earned a little extra money by picking strawberries at 5 cents a box, fiddleheads at 25-30 cents a peck and peddled vegetables to the homes in Marysville. As a boy, Darrell’s job was to keep the wood box full and to carry the drinking water from a spring. They also peddled fresh vegetables by horse and wagon and made a bit of spending money. Most Sunday mornings they walked nearly four miles to and from church and Sunday school without complaint. Darrell’s schooling began in a one room school house. He continued his education in Fredericton and decided to work for a year at the Cotton Mill in Marysville before going to college. Darrell bought a small used James motorcycle and drove it to and from work. In the fall, he sold it and applied to Gordon College in Boston. In September, he started his new life away from home living in a college dorm. Darrell had his first part time position in his home church in Marysville during summer holidays. He took morning and evening services at Marysville and afternoon services at Nashwaak and Penniac. In his second year, Darrell became involved with the Canadian Club and Foreign Missions Fellowship. In 1951, Darrell met Betty Crossman and they were wed in Central Baptist Church, Saint John, on December 31, 1952. After Graduating from Gordon College, Darrell began his pastorate career in Advocate Harbour, NS and attended Acadia Divinity College for the post-grad program, in Digby Neck, NS. Later he accepted an appointment with the Canadian Baptist Mission Board to serve in India where the family moved to Srikakulam and remained for 5 and a half years. After returning to Canada and doing deputation, a position opened up in Temperance Vale, NB and plans were made to move back to Canada. Over the next several years the Chase family moved to North River, PEI, Forest City, Codys, Zealand-Springfield, Staples Settlement, NB, Woods Harbour- Shag Harbour NS. As his retirement was drawing near, the Chases bought a house in Shelburne, NS where Darrell retired in June, 1995, but become interim pastor. In 1999, the Chases moved to White’s Mountain, NB and decided to make Corn Hill Baptist Church their home church. In 2002, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Betty passed away August 25, 2007. In 2008, Darrell married Aida (Candelas) Decker and over the next years they traveled to Cape Coral, Florida, Puerto Rico, New York State and took several tours with Nancy’s Tours. Aida and Darrell moved to Sussex and Faith Bible Baptist Church welcomed them with open arms. He is survived by his wife Aida, two daughters: Diane and her husband Aubrey Trail and Charis and her husband Jeff Boone; two sons: Mark and his wife Karen Chase and Philip and his wife Daniela Chase; two step-sons: Ivan Decker and Daniel Decker and their families; three sisters: Viola Blair, Lola Donovan and Jeanette Miller; 12 grandchildren: Andrew and his wife Krista, Stephen and his wife Catherine, Heather and her husband Michael, Noel, Nathan and his wife Sandra, Joel, Krista, Sacha and her husband Nathaniel, Tanya and her husband Clemens, Jonathan and his wife Serena, Hilary and Isaac; 17 great grandchildren: Annika, Kalli, Benjamin, Megan, Dean, Samuel, Stephen, Joshua, Caleb, Sophie, Wynter, Elizabeth, Hannah, Eleana, Rebekka and Ezra; as well as several nieces and nephews. Rev. Darrell Frederick Chase of Sussex passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on July 10, 2016 at the age of 86. He is predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth (Crossman) and by his sister, Althea Peterson. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Tuesday July 12, 2016 from 1-3 and 6-8pm. A service celebrating Rev. Chase’s life will be held from Faith Bible Baptist Fellowship on Wednesday July 13th at 11:00am with Pastor Tim MacDonald officiating assisted by Rev. Aubrey Trail. There will be a reception in the Church Hall immediately following the service. A private family interment will take place in Newtown Cemetery.
