Obituary of Thomas Joseph Madden

Mr. Thomas Joseph "Tommy" Madden was born in Smiths Creek on December 16, 1922; he was the son of the late Frank Madden and Mary (Ryan) Madden. He was a loving and kind hearted man who would give anyone the shirt off his back. Once he loved you, there was absolutely nothing you could do to make him give up on you. He loved to be surrounded by people, the bigger the crowd the better; especially if that crowd was his family. You could always guarantee a story, a joke or a laugh, when you bumped into Tommy and he loved to dance. When he would often take a moment to look back on the life that he had lived, he would always say, "Theresa is a good woman, what would I have done without her?" Together, they made their lives in Sussex and raised seven beautiful children; 18 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. There was nothing better to them than having their children and grandchildren around. He was always a handyman and would build or give his kids anything he could: a pool, horses, cars, etc. Tommy drove taxi for many years; as well as owning and operating Hotel Sussex for 40 years. He loved to work so much that he only retired because he was forced to at the age of 80. He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church and was actively involved with the care and upkeep of their cemeteries. He faced every trial in his life head on, with the help of three things: his pure and deep rooted faith in God, his never-ending love for his family and whistling. Tommy will live on in the hearts of Theresa his beloved wife of 63 years, their six daughters; Yvonne Wheeler and her husband Wayne of Sussex, Mary Murray and her husband Paul of Penobsquis, Jeanette Lingley and her husband Brent of Cobden, Ontario Jackie Friars and her husband Kevin of Sussex, Denise Madden of Summerside, PEI and Nicole Richardson and her husband Dale of Hampton; his son-in-law, Brad Simmons of Ontario; his grandchildren: Thomas Bateman and Jenna Strang, Liam Bateman and Jeszyka Clark, Lacey Shaw and James Mercer, Ailish Shaw, Katie Murray, Sam Murray, Ben Murray, Sarah Lingley, Erik Lingley, Adam Lingley, Rachel Friars, Kristopher Friars, Kathleen Morrell, Meghan Morrell, Anthony Morrell, Ava Richardson, Lucy Richardson and Jane Richardson; his great grandchildren: Abby, Lily, Jonas, Zoey, Ani, Jace and Paisley; as well as several nieces and nephews. Thomas Joseph Madden of Sussex, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Saint John Regional Hospital on September 15, 2016 at the age of 93. He is predeceased by their son, Frank Patrick Madden, his brothers: Harry, Francis and Adrian and by his sisters: Mona MacDonald and Helen Malone. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-4pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held from St. Francis Xavier RC Church on Monday September 19, 2016 at 11:00 am with Fr. Dan Bastarache officiating. There will be an opportunity to speak to the family at the reception immediately following the committal service in Wards Creek Cemetery. If you are considering making a memorial donation the family has recommended the Sussex Valley Knights of Columbus www.wallacefuneralhome.com The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Green, Extra Mural Hospital Nurses and his home care worker, Leona MacKay for their exceptional loving care in the last years and months of his life.
