Obituary of Janet A. Reicker

Janet was born in Fredericton, December 1, 1935, the youngest daughter of the late Merlin and Jennie (McLeod) Fox and the loving wife of the late Donald Reicker. Early in her career, Janet worked at the Parliamentary Library in Fredericton. Soon after, she met the love of her life, Don, and on August 22, 1959, they were married. They continued to live in Fredericton early in their marriage and from there, moved on to Port Cartier, Quebec. Finally, when their daughter Elizabeth turned 3, they came to Sussex and began laying roots, expanding their family of 4 beautiful girls and growing life-long friendships. Once all of their daughters were well established in school, Janet went to work within the school system filling various administrative positions, at several different schools over the years, retiring in the mid 90’s. Janet was very proud to be a graduate of Fredericton High School and really looked forward to attending class reunions over the years. She was also very proud of her family’s history in the downtown area of Fredericton. Janet’s dad and his brothers owned and operated Fox’s Barber Shop on Queen Street for many years. There were 12 chairs in the shop and the business really was a family affair. To this day, the business still exists and continues to operate under the Fox family name. Janet was a member of the Sussex Golf and Curling Club, and a faithful parishioner of St. Paul’s United Church and the UCW. She was also a member of the Walking Group. Additionally, Janet also belonged to the Bridge Club and was a big contributor to her girls involvement in the Sussex Figure Skating Club. On occasion, she found time to volunteer with the sharing club and always served at the Kiwanis dinners. She and Don were very active and involved over the years and were always up for an adventure. They took up skiing in their 40’s after winning a trip to Marble Mountain in Newfoundland and the girls remember many wonderful summers spent camping at Fundy National Park or seasoning at Pine Cone. Janet was very family oriented and family connection was of the utmost importance. A few summers were spent in Fundy Park trailering while Don travelled back and forth to teach summer school in Sussex. She was an excellent mother and they spent their days learning to swim, hiking and riding their bikes. Janet was fun-loving and could often be found skipping double-dutch with the girls. She especially enjoyed having company, whether it was visitors for her and Don or all of the kids’ friends, her easy spirit and kind and gentle ways made her a gracious hostess. She really enjoyed knitting, sewing and baking and most definitely could cook. Her girls remember tables full of figure skating outfits that she lovingly created over the years and many delicious family meals. Janet played the piano beautifully, learning at a very young age from a nun. She also played the clarinet and when Al Smith started the Adult band in Sussex, she signed up and her talents went to good use entertaining in the Christmas parades and at other local events. She and Don attended many dances at the Curling Club and rarely missed an opportunity to chaperone at the school dances. They absolutely adored a chance to “cut the rug” and were THE perfect dance partners and the kids wonder how much “chaperoning” actually took place. Liz, Patricia, Jen and Judy watched their parents glide effortlessly over the dance floor in seamless harmony over their years and feel blessed to have witnessed such an example of their parents’ true partnership and love. Janet was a beautiful soul who was loved very dearly. She will be forever remembered. “You’re at peace now mom. There are people waiting for you and we have no doubt that they are jingling their keys in anticipation of your arrival….” Mrs. Janet Reicker of Sussex, NB passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the Sussex Health Centre on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the age of 81. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Janet will be forever in the hearts of her daughters: Elizabeth MacIntosh and her husband Alan of New Glasgow, Jennifer Reicker and her partner Lisa MacInnis of Sussex Corner and Judy Reicker and her husband Jason Thede of Toronto; her son-in-law Mike Dunfield of Sussex; her grandchildren: Shannon MacGillivray and her husband Matthew of New Glasgow, Lauren MacIntosh (Aaron) of Moose Jaw, Sask, Shaun MacIntosh of New Glasgow, Bridget Sherwood and her husband Adam of Sussex, Joel Dunfield (Christy) of Fredericton, Jenna Dunfield and her husband Randy Williams of Sussex, Joseph and Logan Dunfield, both of Sussex and Brianna MacInnis of Sussex Corner; her great grandchildren: Isla and Gemma MacGillivray of New Glasgow, Ritchie Lively of Saint John and Olivia Williams of Sussex; her brother-in-law Wayne Reicker of Rusagonis and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Along with her parents and husband Donald, Janet was predeceased by her daughter Patricia; her sisters Marie Jardine and Phyllis Estey and their husbands Archie and Perley and her sister-in-law Lois Howe and her husband Ross.
