Obituary of Ruby Watters
Ruby was born on April 17, 1923; she grew up on
After the war their family grew to include seven girls and a boy. With her belief of, "there's always room for one more," they brought their nephew into the family becoming a brother to all.
Keeping busy was never a problem with so many to raise. She hooked mats to keep their little feet warm when they stepped out of bed. Made quilts to snuggle into at night, knit sweaters, mitts and hats and sewed many coats and dresses.
Years passed and she went to work at Canada Packers and shortly after took the big step to learn to drive.
Life was not always easy. Tragedy struck in December 1969 when her 17 year old daughter, Helen was killed in a car accident. Three years later 12 year old Katie began a 2 year battle with kidney failure ending with her death the day after her 14th birthday. Determination and strength of character kept her going.
She and Gordon visited Grand Manan and fell in love with the island. They bought a small fixer upper and enjoyed many summers there. After Gordon's death in 1985, she was determined to continue spending time on Grand Manan so she had the house raised up on a foundation and added electric heat. Spending even more time on the island, she joined the Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the local Rummage Centre, making many friends and enjoying bingo in her spare time.
She suffered the loss of two more daughters, Linda in 2005 and Neta in 2008.
Ruby also loved to travel and would tell her friends, if family asked her to go somewhere, that she would simply say "When?". She continued to drive between Apohaqui and Grand Manan until the age of 92.
Quilting was a favourite pastime for many years. She was also a beautiful knitter. After a stroke in December of 2007, she had to learn to knit again. Her stubbornness came in handy, as she would not give up and she regained her knitting ability. These past few years, she was constantly knitting. All of which she gave away. Just this past Christmas, at the age of 94, she donated to the United Church Mitten Tree: three head bands, four pairs of slippers, 15 hats, 20 pairs of socks, 24 sweaters and 37 pairs of mittens.
Ruby may be gone to be with her family in heaven, but her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
