Obituary of Carl Anton Smidt

Mr. Carl Anton Smidt was born in Saint John on July 13, 1935 to Erik and Ingrid (Bertelsen) Smidt. At a very young age his father had to return to Denmark to serve for the Danish Merchant Navy. At the age of 15, he returned to Canada.

Carl married Eleanor Stevens on October 3, 1959. They would carry on their love story through their children: John, Robert and Susan and later their grandchildren: Justin, Michael and Eva. Despite his busy life, he was first and foremost a family man. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and was very proud of each of them.

He worked for Transport Canada Aviation Division for 36 years. Early in his career he spent 13 months living and working in the Artic where he even spent some time on the ice breakers. In 1990 at the age of 54, he retired as the Regional Superintendent of Electronics Maintenance and was a proud member of the NBSCETT. Carl was very proud of his Certificate of Appreciation for his work assisting the US Coast Guard.

Carl had a love of Hamm radios and dirt biking. His passion was for snowmobiling which was a huge part of his life. He served as two term President of the NBFSC, a member of the NB Trails Council and an avid member of the Goshen Snowmobile Club.

He will live on in the hearts of his loving wife, Eleanor (Stevens) Smidt; his children: John Smidt and his wife Sheri of Penobsquis and Susan Smidt and Barry Laity of Riverview; his sister, Myrna Jensen of New Denmark; his grandchildren: Justin Smidt (Georgina Dibley), Michael Smidt (Rebecca Lockhart) and Eva Lowe-Smidt.

Mr. Carl Anton Smidt of Penobsquis passed away at the Sussex Health Center on January 25, 2018 at the age of 82.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert.
