Obituary of Erma Grace Macaulay
Mrs. Erma Grace Macaulay was born in Royalton, NB on May 25, 1930; she was the daughter of the late Clair W. and Mary (Owen) Crawford and wife of the late J. Bennett Macaulay who passed away in 1999.
She married John Bennett Macaulay July 21, 1956 who passed away December 4, 1999.Erma attended Lower Royalton School from grades one to eight, in the following year she attended Centreville Superior School from where she graduated in 1947. Later that year she enrolled in teachers College. In 1979, she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New Brunswick, where she continued her education and in 1983 she received her Bachelor of Education Degree. Erma taught school for over 39 years: beginning her career at the Upper Royalton School in 1948. She continued teaching for many years having taught in the Lower Royalton School, in Saint John at Dufferin, King Edward and Aberdeen Schools. She taught at Maple Hill School in Montreal for a year prior to coming to Sussex where she taught for over thirty years. Erma also taught public speaking to students for oratorical competitions, she trained choirs for local and provincial Music Festivals and was in very involved in Drama productions. Erma taught piano to students who studied with the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music and some of whom continued their music and were tested by Mount Allison University Professors.
Erma was a member and past president of Local Teachers Association, Past Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the Saint John Community College. She was a Real Estate Agent from 1987-2002 and Past President of the former Sussex Real Estate Board, and a former Director of the New Brunswick Real Estate Board.
Erma was a Federal Returning Officer for Fundy Royal from 1988-1994, Founding Chair of the Sussex and Area Literacy 1978(now Read Sussex) Co-founding Chair of Kids Stuff Theatre in 1987, a member and Past President of the Sussex and Area Art Club, a member and Past President of the Royal Chapter IODE, member of the Executive of the New Brunswick Chapter of the IODE, Director of Board of Atlantic Health Sciences Corp. from 2002-2004. Erma was an active member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, where she was a supply organist and a member of the Church Vestry. In 1989, she researched and complied information for the "One Hundred Years of Country Church ".
Erma Studied art under the direction of Rev. R. H. Nicholson, In 1984,she hosted a One-Person Show of local Historic Buildings in Pen and Ink Etchings and participated in several group Art Shows.
She enjoyed playing the piano, collecting antiques, painting and tending her beautiful garden where several Wedding and Anniversary photos have been taken.
Erma is survived by her sister: Georgie Crawford of Montreal, Quebec; her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Crawford of Royalton and Janice Crawford of Royalton; her nieces and nephews: Stephanie Parent and her husband Jacques of Plumweseep, Shawn Bickford and his wife Heather of Petitcodiac, Alan and his wife Judy of Edmonton, DorisAnn Craig and her husband Wayne of Fredericton, Helen Crawford of Grand Falls, Charles Crawford of New Hampshire, Andrew Crawford and his wife Colleen of Royalton, Jennie Harquail and her husband David of Ottawa, Bill Crawford of Royalton and Tom Crawford of Royalton, NB; her great nieces and nephews: Maeve, Anna, Hollie, Heidi, Dawn Marie, Charles, Jordan, Katelyn, Aeryn, Evie, Brian and Laura; as well as other extended family.
Mrs. Erma Grace Macaulay of Sussex passed away at the Sussex Health Center on August 19, 2018 at the age of 88.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, J. Bennett Macaulay; her sister, Joyce Bickford and her brother-in-law, Gordon Bickford; her brothers: John and David and by her nephew, James.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-3 and 6-8pm.
A Celebration of Erma's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 11:00am. The Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
