The Boys’ Brigade motto with an anchor and a cross symbols of lives which are sure and stedfast when anchored in their faith in God. Hugh was a member of this group and pictured above is one of the many medals he earned.
The Queen’s Badge is the highest award in the Boys’ Brigade
To earn the badge the member is challenged and equipped to take on responsibility, set personal goals and contribute to their community.
The following is a partial list of the requirements one must achieve in order to earn this medal (one which Hugh earned before coming to Canada in 1961).
Develop interests and skills
Provide voluntary service
Take responsibility within the BB or Church

We were so saddened to have heard of Hughs passing. He was a wonderful friend and always treated us so good..... a tremendous encouragement to us in ministry. We value the times together with Hugh and Elaine ever since the first time they took us to their home when we had so very little. It was a privilege to have visited just a few weeks ago at their new house in Sussex, NB. May God's comfort and blessing be upon Elaine and the family and love from us.

Hugh's Eulogy
For those who might not know me, I am Elaine, Hugh’s friend for 57 years and for nearly 54 of them, his wife.
For a few brief moments I’d like to share with you, my family and my friends, a few reflections as we remember and honour his life together.
Hugh was born in May 1941 to Christina Wilson Purdue Hogg and Hugh Hogg of Port Glasgow, Scotland. The night he was born, his mom had to leave her bed and climb the nearby hills for safety. The German bombers came up the river to bomb the shipyards on the River Clyde. When his mom returned to her home, she discovered her bed full of debris where a bomb had damaged the roof. Years later she used this story to teach her young son the Bible verse, I will Lift up mine eyes unto the hills form whence commeth my help. My help commeth from the Lord…(Psalm 121, 1&2)
His father served his country by joining the RAF and shortly thereafter he was posted to India where he worked making glider planes for a planned invasion of Japan. His service, so far from home meant he never saw his baby son for nearly four years. When his dad did return to Scotland, Hugh remembers going from Port Glasgow to Glasgow by train to meet him. At first his dad was a stranger, but they soon warmed to each other and Hugh remembers enthusiastically pointing every landmark, such as the River Clyde and Dumbarton Rock to his Dad on the journey home.
As a youngster he played soccer, participated in track and field and won the 100 -yard dash for the Renfrewshire County Schoolboy Championships in 1953. While we were dating he gave me the commemorative coin celebrating the queen’s coronation he earned at those championships as a symbol of his love and the fact he had asked me to go steady.
Hugh Campbell, named after an Irish grandfather, was an active member of the Boys Brigade and in his teen-years played the bass drum when the Boys were on parade.
He immigrated to Canada in 1961 just three weeks before his 20th birthday. His father took the position as the superintendent of outfitting the ships being built at the Saint John Dry Dock. Hugh started his Canadian work career in the office in the accounting department. Shortly thereafter, he was offered an opportunity to train for a programmer on the new computers. (Prior to this, he was doing his apprenticeship as a weights and measures inspector in Scotland.) The computer line of work soon became his career path of choice and soon found him working in the IT department for Irving in Saint John; the provincial government in Fredericton; a mining company in the Eastern Townships in Quebec and finally for a large pulp and paper mill in Port Hawkesbury, NS. While there he managed the IT department until he retired in 2003.
While growing up in Scotland, Hugh fell in love with the game of golf. When he retired here in Sussex, his love of the game found him part of the foursome who always booked the earliest tee off spot at the local golf course on most weekday mornings.
But more important than golf or work was Hugh’s love for his family, our beautiful daughters, Heather and Heidi, sons-in-law Bill and Al, and our three grandchildren, Emily, Alicia and Matthew Inman. He always made time for our girls. He played games with them, took them skating in the winter, attended their piano and dancing concerts as well as any school and church events. Not only did he attend their events, he was an ISCF leader and an AWANA leader, helping his children and other young people find the faith that would anchor their lives.
For me, his wife, he was my friend, my companion, and the person who encouraged me to try new things. He believed in me and stood behind me when I started studying music at age 25, started teaching shortly thereafter went back to college in my forties and started writing at the age of 52.
Hugh loved to travel, and his job allowed us to see many countries together. Even though we travelled to several countries throughout northern Europe and as far away as NZ, Hong Kong and China, there was no place like home, his beloved Scotland and his new, adopted home, Canada.
Soon after our arrival in Sussex fifteen years ago, Kerry Allison threw down the gauntlet and dared Hugh to meet the sugar shack gang to play a game of PSHAW. Although he had never played the game before, he managed to meet the challenge and won the first game. The faithful gamers have done their best to make certain he was challenged regularly but up until he was no longer able to attend the Wednesday night fellowship group about six months ago, he held the record for the best score.
Both Hugh and I have been blessed to find a such a caring, supportive church family. Your love has been evident during Hugh’s lengthy illness and sudden passing.
A year ago, after a sobering chat with our family physician, Hugh and I decided to downsize our home. He rallied to this project. People who know him often commented on the immediate smile that lit up his face whenever he could share his design ideas for our new home. While he was busy preparing a new home for me, God was preparing a new home for him and this week, after a five-year battle against many diseases, he moved to his place of rest.
The Boys’ Brigade Motto is an anchor inscribed with the words, "Sure and Stedfast" . I’d like to invite all who loved Hugh to draw comfort and strength from this symbolic Anchor. As we face the future, may we be "Sure and Stedfast" for we have a hope and an anchor for our soul.
Dear God, keep us sure and stedfast, until we too enter our eternal home. Amen

I was 8 years old when I met Hugh. He took me over to the schoolyard to play soccer. My most vivid memory was him pasting the ball against the concrete wall...the force and power of that kick cannonated throughout the streets of our small neighbourhood! We heard sirens wailing in the distance shortly after...didn't stick around to find out if it was coincidence.
From there Hugh and I formed a life-long bond when I received a table-hockey set for Christmas. While dating,Elaine spent more than one "hour or two" waiting for us to finish "just one more game". Hugh loved Gordie Howe and the Detroit Red Wings; I was a Montreal Canadiens fan. In later years I realized how eagerly Hugh had taken to our Canadian game and to his new home. I think he always missed Scotland but he loved his life in Canada, his family, and his God!
Hugh, I miss you!
