Richard Sullivan posted a condolence

We all have known certain special people whom we genuinely enjoyed spending time with. Scott was one of those, always happy to see you, always asked about your family and generously listened and then brought you up to date on the loves of his life, Sylvia and Jess. This reflected his values and priorities because only after sharing family updates would he get down to the business at hand and he usually had something up his sleeve.
I struggle to remember when and where we first met but I am pretty sure that it was down in those miserable, grungy, tiny welfare offices above the liquor store beside the court house. I quickly learned the about Scott, the “champion of the underdog” and the warm helpful professional who did what he could to alleviate those multitude of problems that many faced. That was certainly true for clients but I sensed a strong sense of camaraderie where social workers and other professionals leaned on each other. I saw Jim, Sylvia and Scott as leaders in creating success in the often extremely difficulties of social work. I’m not sure if he was there to work or to hustle Sylvia. But that is another story! :-)
I have memories of getting together with Bob Steeves, Jim Cameron and others with Scott and listening to the stories of highly competitive pool games. I regret not becoming a regular at Jim’s or Bob’s Pool Halls but it wasn’t for lack of invitation because they all were welcoming and inviting.
Working with Arnold Hopper and Scott who spearheaded PALS was an eyeopener and an education for me. I was amazed at Scott’s positive attitude and tenacity. No matter what roadblocks were placed in front of us, he would give us his mantra “Jeez, there’s gotta be a way around this, Richard” and sure enough we would slug it out and eventually one of the most innovative and effective programs evolved. I knew then that Scott Walker was a player and I would always have his back and felt surely that he would have mine.
I had always hoped that Scott would become a politician. He had great interest and knew that that was the way to effect change. We often had long discussions about what was needed here in Sussex and I appreciated his frankness and believe that he would have been a crackerjack leader and would have been a strong representative. It is sad that this didn’t come to fruition.
I admit that I often looked forward to seeing more of the Walkers and encouraged Scott to become a member of the Sussex Area Community Foundation. There his practical approach led to the formation of the “Mother’s Day Lobster Dinner Fundraiser” Since SACFI supported charities by giving grants, we agreed that we only have one major fundraiser a year so as not to compete with other charities fundraising. Scott suggested the dinner which has been successful for the past six years and counting. This was his baby along with Al Gerrish and all of the Directors who rolled up their sleeves to make this such a great success, raising thousands of dollars used to strengthen our communities.
Meeting with Scott was uplifting and good fun. Travelling with him and friends Brad and Jamie was enlightening. We all travelled to Ingonish four years ago and stayed at their family cottage just on the border of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It has to be noted that Scott and Sylvia had prepared and packed for this excursion and we wanted for nothing. Everything was top shelf but the most surprising thing was that Scott prepared the meals and when any of us tried to help out, we were shooed out of the kitchen with just enough of a scowl that wise men knew when to back off. He cooked exceptional meals and had all kinds of snacks for the card games or when we caught a game on TV. The perfect host!
He was so good that we had to give him the gears and criticized him for not having highland dancers serving single malt scotch or arranging sight seeing to see the colours of the Cabot Trail out when we were there or showing us the wildlife of the island, most notably moose. The next morning as we arose, Scott was long gone. We figured that he was out for a walk or visiting friends. We later found out that he was up at the Highland Links to make sure that everything was in place for our round. (Always looking after his friends!) Now as we teed up a large moose wandered across the fairway on #1 and Scott loudly announced that he had come up earlier to arrange this so that we would stop our whining about not having a true Cape Breton experience. That was hilarious but since the moose had quickly disappeared, we continued to work on him. Later after a wonderful, fun filled round of golf on a superb course, as we came up # 18 a magnificent young bull moose came up along side of the green and circled the clubhouse slowly allowing us to take pictures of him and exciting all those about at the time. We heard the smirk from Scott as he again loudly told us that he only gave first class experiences to his friends and asked if we were satisfied and prepared to buy him a much deserved beer at the 19th hole. What a guy!

I met Scott in 1978 while we were living in the Loyola residence at Saint Mary's University. Back then we called it High Rise 2. Scott was going to Dal while I was at TUNS. There used to be a show on TV called Dance Fever and the guys in residence took to calling me "Denny" after the star of the show Deney Terrio. But Scott always called me Denny Doherty, who was a member of the Mamas & The Papas and probably from Cape Breton. I would in turn call Scott "Young Sky Walker".
At the end of the school year, Scott invited me to visit his home in Sydney Mines so after my final exam I hit the road an thumbed a ride to Cape Breton. There I met his parents George and Gerry and his sister Joyce. Scott took me around the The Mens Club, The Yacht Club and the KOC. He knew EVERYONE. When someone at the KOC was giving me a hard time, Scott was quick to step in and and settle things down.
After graduation, we went our separate ways and we lost touch. Then in 1997, I took a job at the PCS Mine and moved to Sussex. I was running late for curling one Tuesday night and rushed into the club. Scott was standing at the top of the stairs at the entrance to the upstairs lounge and when he saw me he said Denny Doherty!
We reconnected and I met Sylvia and Jessica. Our families socialized together from time to time and I frequently attended Gentlemen's Club sessions on Friday afternoon after work at Scott's house. We played golf often and Scott invited me to visit him at his cottage in Ingonish on Cape Breton. I managed to do so a couple of times and we had the opportunity to play the Highland Links which Scott proudly insisted was one of the top rated golf courses in Canada.
I left Sussex in 2006 and I missed Friday afternoon Gentleman's Club. However Scott and I did manage to have lunch a couple of times a year, usually at Jeremiah's in the Saint John City market. Over the last few years, I used to kid Scott that he was starting to look more and more like his father and I called him George a few times.
Scott was my friend and was a very good man. He will be missed.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your father, husband and friend, but also my wish to celebrate Scott's contribution to his community and to the businesses in the region. I always enjoyed Scott's enthusiasm and keen interest in learning about his clients' needs so that he could be an effective advocate for the local economy. I am so sorry that he was not able to enjoy a longer retirement and wish you peace and love as you remember him and try to move on without his physical presence. Take care of one another. Nell
