Obituary of Hazen Bruce Hogg

It is with great sadness that the family of Hazen Bruce Hogg announces his passing on February 15th at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, NB. Born on Sept 25, 1934 in Central Bedeque, PEI, Hazen was the sixth of seven boys of Walter and Ethel (Green) Hogg.

Although born into a farming family, Hazen chose the business route graduating from the Business Program at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. Hazen’s career began with the Bank of Commerce in Moncton, Schurman’ Building Centre in Charlottetown and Sussex.  Hazen was always an entrepreneur at heart which led him to beginning his own scouring pad business in Sussex, HB Industries and later a marketing firm, HB Marketing.  Hazen and Birdie enjoyed travelling,  spending winters in warmer climates, eventually enjoying many motor home treks with their puppy Sophie, throughout the southern United States, with summers spent on the shore of St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea.

He met the love of his life at an Island beach bonfire, and Birdie and Hazen were married in 1956. They spent several years in Charlottetown raising a family and in 1963 Hazen and Birdie relocated to Sussex with four girls aged five and under in tow, Hazen and Birdie arrived in Sussex and fell in love with this welcoming community where they made lifelong friendships. Throughout his life, Hazen was very involved in his community and church.  As a young man, he was president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Charlottetown. He was active in St. Paul’s United Church, serving on many committees and as an elder for 30 years. As the Charter President of the Sussex Rotary Club, he became a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow. He lived his life believing in and adhering to the Rotarian Four-Way test. He was also an active and dedicated member of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Hazen is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, and best friend Birdie (nee Cairns); his daughters: Karen (George) Erb of Fredericton, Susan (Tom) Parker of Moncton, Patti (Gordon) Holloway of Fredericton and Heather (Robert) McGrath of Petitcodiac. “Grampie” will be missed by his 8 grandchildren: Jessica Erb (Gary Hall), Chris Erb, Julie Parker (Gregg Bandy), Sarah Colgan (Craig), Matthew (Kim) Holloway, Emily Holloway (Kyle Embrett), Maria McGrath (Jamie McFarlane) and Alec McGrath (Tabitha Cameron): Great-grandchildren: Stella and Maggie Colgan, Gavin and Brooke Holloway, and Charlotte Holloway.  Survived by brother Willard of Connecticut, sisters-in-law Beryl Hogg, Erma Hogg, Erma Hogg Huestis, and Ruth (Fred) Biason. Hazen's beautiful Havanese, Dexter, was very special to him and watched  closely over Hazen as his health deteriorated.

Predeceased by brothers Lloyd, Denton, Ralph, Claude and Wendell; sisters-in-law Eileen Hogg, Ernie Hogg, Carol Hogg, and Mary Cairns Rogers, and brother-in-law Donald C. Rogers. Also survived by many caring nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Friday February 22nd from 5-8 p.m.  A Celebration of Hazen’s life will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, Sussex on Saturday  February 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Donations to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, ALS Society, St. Paul’s United Church, Sussex or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
