Obituary of Arthur Goold

Mr. Arthur Hamblet Goold was born in Sussex, NB on August 20, 1933; He was the youngest brother to Dorothy, Audrey and Herbert, the children of George and Edith (Murray) Goold. Art was a member of the Class of 1950 graduating from Sussex Composite High School. Following high school, he graduated from Ranger School in Fredericton, returning in 1953 to work along side his mother, father and sister Dot. For several years, until the mid '60's, Art looked after the landscaping side of Goold's Nurseries. In the late 1960's he took on the floral designing side of the business where he continued until recently.

Through St. Paul's United Church, the Stringer and Goold families became acquainted and, with the knowledge that the Stringers had one of the few television sets in town, Art began courting Barb. They were married on September 8, 1956 at St. Paul's in 1958, they tragically lost their first daughter, Cynthia, but in October 1959 happily adopted Pam. Shari entered their world in 1962 and they welcomed Karen in 1966. Except for the occasional addition of a stray dog or cat, their family was complete. Art's long career in the family business took him to the top of greenhouses replacing glass, to landscaping Mount Allison University, across Canada and the United States representing the national floral organization as President of Flowers Canada. When not working, he was involved within his community. In high school it was Key Club, when first married it was Jaycees and in the early 1960's, as a founding member, it was the creation of the Sussex & District Chamber of Commerce. Then it was municipal politics as Deputy Mayor, the idea and construction of Princess Louise Park, the Presidency of the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta through which he made special friendships with Tony Rickett and Jim MacMullin. There was the Sussex Figure Skating Club, Chairman of the Board for the Sussex Health Centre, President of the NB Hospital Association, the building by hand of Royal Gardens, now Avon Valley, being a Lt. in the reserves of the 8th Canadian Hussars, Art loved his community and devoted years of his life for it betterment, and he did it from behind the scenes, from the stool behind the bench in the "back shop", never needing recognition for what he felt was a duty to Sussex. He took pride in what he helped build. Even up to a couple of weeks ago, he would ask Pam, after closing time Saturdays, to take a quick trip to Prince Louise Park to watch the people use the facilities. He would drive by the park on Fiesta Saturdays and Sundays just to see the crowds. That made all the work worthwhile, Sussex had a gathering point.

When Art had spare time, he continued his love of hockey. He played junior hockey while in high school and then in his adult years he was on the board for the Sussex Junior A Royals. He and Gerry Alexander would scout all over the Atlantic Provinces and the New England States for top ice talent, promising their parents they would look after their sons as if their own. Some of the boys made Sussex home. There was the group of friends of the Gourmet Club, the Tuesday golf nights and his passion, flying. From the aeronca "champ" in 1959 to the 5 years building the Luton Major CF-GWG with Bill and Orland, which still flies today, the only one in existence. Instead of a car drive, Art would take his family and their friends for quick flips in the sky. Halloween was not a time of trick or treating but it was for so-called hunting with his oldest friends, Dave Moffett, Uncle Keillor Coleman and lifelong friend, Lawrence McFarlane (who he did not try to drown in the lake on that cold, winter's day.) For 50 years the 4 boys would head to Pleasant Lake to hunt a little and play cards a lot and they would return with a couple of stories for the families but would leave the real truths at the Lake.

But Art's biggest devotion was to his family even though at times, his family did not get all his attention. He loved his wife Barb, and never fully recovered from losing her in 2007. He loved working and living with daughters Pam and Karen. He loved watching the busy family life of his daughter, Shari and her husband Fred. He loved watching his granddaughter, Callie, her love of the written word and her wit and seeing her walk down the aisle to marry Pat. He loved his grandson, Nathan and his ease of sports, his work ethic and focus. He loved listening to his granddaughter, Kate while she played beautiful music on his mother's piano and grow into a devoted caring teacher. He loved watching his granddaughter, Megan as she practiced her karate on her brother and develop into a beautiful teenager. He loved his cats, they could do no wrong, and were spoiled to the ninth degree.

Art's legacy is "community". Whether community of teams, community of town, community of family and friends, he took pride in the fact...he had a hand in it all. A Work Of Art!

He will live on in the hearts of his daughters: Pam Goold, Shari Brenan and her husband Fred and Karen Goold, all of Sussex; his sister, Audrey Coleman of Riverview; his grandchildren: Callie Glenn and her husband Pat of Riverview, Nathan Brenan of Halifax, Kate Brenan and Cody Fraser of Riverview and Megan Brenan of Sussex; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
