George McPhee

Obituary of George Albert McPhee

Mr. George Albert McPhee was born in Sussex, NB on June 15, 1937. He was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Lucas) McPhee. George met and later fell in love with the girl next door. The only girl who ever held his heart. George and Phyllis were married on June 14, 1958 and would spend the next 61 years celebrating their love story. Phyllis and George were the epitome of teamwork. For 56 years they worked side by side. From 1970 to 1976, they owned and operated Uncle Fred’s Restaurant in Sussex Corner and because one thing at a time was never George’s style, they opened the Cream Puff Bakery on Main Street in Sussex in 1972. The picture-perfect duo of entrepreneurs. Their business savvy would shine on in 1992 when they got back into the restaurant business and operated Mama Georges Restaurant in Midland – followed by Mama’s Too. Every venture they began had the Midas Touch. They could make any venture a success. Hand in hand they were invincible. George was a hard worker and fueled by Phyllis they worked hard and loved even harder everyday. George was not only a hard worker, but a volunteer like no other. He was always the kind of man that wanted to give back. Whether it was with one of his contagious smiles or laughs, the shirt off his back or his last quarter on hand. Kind, generous, selfless, loving, compassionate – all of these are just a few ways to describe George. He always wanted to tap into anything new he could get his hands on. This is when he decided to pursue his interest in the funeral industry and joined the team at Wallace Funeral Home – also becoming an agent for Classic Memorials. With him George brought over 50 years of serving his community and as if he were born into it. He fit both positions to a tee. George was a member and past president of the Sussex Kiwanis Club and the Past Lt. Governor of the Fundy Division #18 EC & C Kiwanis District. He was also a member of Zion Lodge #21 F &AM, a member of the Sussex Shrine Club, a member and past president of the Maple Leaf Unit and a member of the Luxor Shrine. He was a past member of the board of directors of Wallace Funeral home, a member of the board of NB Masonic housing and charities, the board of Kirk Hill Cemetery and the Lions Villa. There was not much he didn’t like to throw his hand into. George made friends at every turn and once you were a friend of George’s that was it. He would greet you with a smile and a wave and if he had the opportunity to stop for a chat – he always left you with a laugh and a joke. Even a joke he had told you a million times, would always bring joy to your day. He had a passion for travelling, whether it was their many trips to Vegas, Florida, Barbados, Bahamas, Jamaica, motorhome adventures or even just the Moncton Casino – he loved the time he spent with Phyllis exploring. He was blessed with the gift of gab, and the gift of heart. There was more love in the pinky finger of George McPhee than most would be lucky enough to have in a hundred lifetimes. He loved with everything he had, and his kind soul will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched. He will live on in the hearts of his children: Judy Ross of Fredericton, Kathy McPhee-ONeill and her husband Mike of Sussex, Larry McPhee of Saint John and Michael McPhee and Emma Jenkins of PEI; his daughter-in-law, Barb McPhee of Saint John; his grandchildren: Cassie Ross and her husband Fane Gallant, Chelsea Ross and her husband Dallas Walsh, Ben Ross, Stephanie Taylor and her husband Dr. Luke Taylor, Shawn O’Neill and his wife Laura, Laura McPhee, Brendan McPhee, Lucas McPhee and Dominick Jenkins; 5 great grandchildren: Dryden, Sophie, Owen, Max and Emma; as well as many extended family and friends. Mr. George McPhee of Mt Hebron passed away peacefully at home and was reunited with the love of his life on February 17, 2020 at the age of 82. Along with his parents, George is predeceased by the love of his life, Phyllis who passed away in June; an infant daughter who passed away in 1963 and his companions: Cookie and Candy. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-433-1176).
