Obituary of Phyllis Thompson

Mrs. Phyllis Blanche Thompson was born in Barnesville, NB on April 6, 1932; she was the daughter of George and Merne (Kirkpatrick) Armstrong. When Phyllis Armstrong first came to Sussex, from Barnesville, she got a job at the KINGS COUNTY RECORD And excelled at typing and shorthand. She worked there for a few years and loved it. Then she met Roy Doherty (her future husband), got married, and had two children, Steven, born in 1955 and Ivy-Rose, born in 1958. When Roy Died, Phyllis got busy! She Sold AVON for years and loved it. She worked as a secretary for auctioneers at the CO-OP’s Wednesday “Cattle Sales”, Phyllis took several female boarders from out in the country so they could attend Sussex High School (before school busses), she also did typing for several local businessmen. Phyllis sang in the senior choir at St. Paul’s United Church for many years and loved it. She also loved laying the piano and going to jamborees at the high school with her friends, Mary Bell and Eileen Arbing. Phyllis met up with Amos W. Thompson from St. Martins and eventually they got married. Amos’s favorite thing in the world was base ball. He and Phyllis were instrumental in getting the “Golden Arrows” and “Sussex Alpine” intermediate and senior baseball teams here in Sussex. Amos was team manager; Phyllis was treasure and ran the canteen. Now Phyllis found herself spending a lot of time at ballfields all over the Maritimes. It was worth it as “the team” won several championships. Amos and Phyllis bought a 1979 ¾ ton Chevy pickup truck and a “Caveman” truck camper. They travelled extensively in NB, NS, PEI and Maine. They loved Kings Landing, Mactaquac, Peggys Cove, the Cabot Trail and of course St. Matins, where they had a little camp. When not camping or at the ballfields, Phyllis loved oil painting and tole painting (both her and her daughters house are full of her handiwork). Phyllis (and Ivy) loved gardening and made quite a few trips to nurseries and garden centers. Above all else Phyllis loved “her cats” – Patches, Buddy, Tiger and Little Lady. She gave each a forever home. Phyllis was a great mother and friend. She will be dearly missed by Steven, Tiger, Little Lady, and her friends. R.I.P. mom you earned it. Mrs. Phyllis Blanche Thompson of Sussex passed away at the Sussex Health Center on April 7, 2020, the day after her 88th birthday.
