Obituary of Marylou Wiggins

Marylou Wiggins, a woman deeply devoted to her loving family and her community of Apohaqui, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Marylou, who served as a constituency assistant to the late Honourable Greg Thompson, MP, was perhaps best known throughout her life as an energetic community volunteer and leader. Naturally inclined to take charge – her friends and family would often needle her by calling her “The Boss” – she was a person of great character, strength, compassion and warmth. For several decades, she choreographed countless community events, including Canada Day celebrations in Apohaqui. She was dedicated to many local organizations, including the ACW Church of Ascension, Apohaqui, the Apohaqui Lower Millstream Recreation Centre, and the Sussex-Fundy-St. Martins PC Association. She served on the Regional Planning Commission and the Planning Review and Advisory Committee for her area and committed many years to organizations like the Apohaqui Home & School Association, Girl Guides and Scouts Canada. Marylou enjoyed quilting, cooking, crafting and gardening. Above all, she cherished being surrounded by her family, her friends and the people of her community. Born on April 1, 1946, Marylou was the daughter of the late John and Kathleen (Doyle) Saunders. Marylou is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert of Apohaqui; her children, Krista Nyenhuis of Norton, Rob (Lyndsay Tischer) of Edmonton, Kara (Dave) Stonehouse of Quispamsis; her grandchildren, Valri (Jon), Ethan, Nevan, Noah and Maggie, and her great-granddaughter Amelia; sisters-in-law Eileen Saunders of Apohaqui, and Joan Saunders of Rothesay, as well as several nieces and nephews, and beloved friends. She was predeceased by her sister Jeanie and her brothers Melvin, Charles (Tina), and Garey. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506) 433-1176. A private funeral service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Marylou can be made to the Church of Ascension Apohaqui Roof Fund, the Apohaqui Recreation Centre or the charity of the donor’s choice.
