Gail and Neil and their families,
So sorry to hear about your Dad, Grampy and Great Grampy.
I always thought of Murray as my special friend and a brother. The years I lived with Murray and his mother were good years. I never lacked for food or warmth. For a little ten year old girl coming from a home that didn’t even have a cat or a dog to live on a farm with a variety of animals was a little nerve wracking at first to say the least but I came to love each and every one of them.
His family took me in and treated me as one of their own.
I remember the horse named Nel and how Mrs. Steen used to trade her homemade butter and eggs at Berwick for groceries. I was on the buggy with her and on our way to Berwick one day when Nel was going too slow for Mrs. Steen’s liking so she jumped off to retrieve a switch. In the meantime, Nel decided to speed up on her own rather then take a lickin’ but I was scared to death because I didn’t know “gee” from “ha”. Lol.
I saw poor Mrs. Steen charging after us and thankfully she caught up and jumped on with me and we continued on our way.
Long story short my “brother” became my dear “brother-in-law when he married Evelyn.
Love and prayers to you all,
Marvel

Gail , Neil and all the family,
Lots of memories of drives to church, Sunday school and bible school.
Snider mountain was a great place to grow up and we always had great neighbours in your family.
I always loved to hear the stories of the time he and Uncle Russell went to Ontario to earn their fortune.
They learned their fortune was here and they came home in a short time.
Our condolences and prayers. He will be missed by many.

My deepest condolences on the passing of one so dear to so many. It's so hard to believe Murray is gone despite his 92+ years, he was always so young at heart, with his ready smile & wit. Derrick, Krista & I will never forget the laughter filled good times we shared with him & his beloved Evelyn & his 40 year close friendship with Lloyd, who he has mourned & missed like another brother these past 3 1/2 years.
Murray's love of family was without limit & I fondly recall the evening he & Evelyn visited us when our kids left for University. "Are you doing alright by yourselves, with an empty nest ?". Lloyd answered "I guess we're back where we started 25 years ago" & Murray quickly said "but then you have plans to build a family when you start out & that's what you live & work for, then all of a sudden they're gone - it's awful". Evelyn said "I didn't know what I was going to do with him, he missed them so much."
They reminisced & laughed as he told of leaving for "the States" for their honeymoon & his announcement on crossing the border that they were in the USA & Evelyn saying "but where's all the tall buildings?". The long journey through the Maine woods hadn't matched the glamorous images of bright lights & sky scrapers gleaned from magazines.
One blustery Winter day, entering the little Snider Mountain Baptist church he stoked the crackling wood fire, grabbed his comb, asking "how's that look?", to which Evelyn wittingly responded "pretty white!". Both, with others were devoted, faithful & active keeping it ready for services, & hosting the annual picnic "on the hill". Many precious memories linger of your beloved family patriarch, so pleased that he was first to know that his grandson, Trevor had just proposed to his fiancé, when they stopped in to tell him - very meaningful to him. Our lives have been enriched & blessed by Murray. You are in my thoughts & prayers at this difficult time of loss & longing & are not alone in your grief. Madeline Sleep

Throughout our life journey we meet individuals who leave an lasting impression. Murray was one such individual who, because of shared family members, has been part of my life memories for close to 50 years. And when I think of Snider Mountain it is my family who live there and Murray that are simultaneously recalled. His home was the first place to welcome you to The Mountain (unless you were entering up over the Steen Hill Road or through Northrup Settlement) and Murray, just like his home, greeted you with warmth, kindness and hospitality. His smile, his humour, his laughter, his ability to engage in conversations easily are memories I am recalling as we embrace this time of grief and loss. We surround each of you with love during this time and hold you in our hearts with tenderness as you journey forward. We offer our thanks and gratitude to God for the blessings of Murray's life and that we, like many, were recipients of his blessings of gifts, talents and love. Holding you in our hearts and prayers. My earliest memories of Murray are of him driving a group of kids from Snider Mountain to Collina for Bible School. My last memory is seeing him enjoying the fresh air outside under the trees at the nursing home. I don’t think I ever saw Murray without a smile. He was a good neighbour to everyone and was especially kind to my mother after Dad died. He will be fondly remembered and missed by everyone who knew him. Our loss is heaven’s gain. We extend heartfelt sympathy to his entire family. Warren and Arletta Long Hayes
