Obituary of Harold Douglas Armstrong

The family of Harold Armstrong, announce his peaceful passing, in his 92nd year at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, of a life well lived, on May 14, 2022.

Harold was born on September 8, 1930, at Armstrong’s Corner, Queens County, NB to Austin and Orie (Allingham) Armstrong.  His family’s farm was expropriated when Base Gagetown was founded.  The family then settled in Roachville in September 1953.

He and Beatrice were married in 1954 as he wasn’t going to cross the river another winter! They met at a dance at the Gagetown Fair. Harold wore many hats during his working years and raising his family. He was a dairy farmer and worked for many years with his father Austin before taking over the operation. He also drove the red school bus, dug graves year-round, did carpentry work, worked with Jack Booth on the combine, and helped to install furnaces with Dave Sharp. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church, Golden K and the Kennebec Aces Square Dance Club.

In their spare time Harold and Beatrice enjoyed square dancing, bus trips, playing cards, traveling on their mopeds, and visiting their family and those who had been neighbours and friends from Queens County.  Harold also enjoyed the livestock auctions and the horse pulls at fairs while talking to anyone he happened to sit beside. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, of 67 years, Beatrice (Russell) Armstrong; his daughters:  Beth (Bill) Wanamaker of Roachville, Jean (Don) Harvey of Stittsville, ON, Judy (Bob) Candy of Roachville; his grandchildren: Erin (Dominick) Colpitts, Joel (Carol) Wanamaker, Amanda (Maarten Jonkman) Harvey, Cameron (Laura Corkum) Harvey, Nick (Shari) Candy, and Tiffany (Wade) Wilkins; his great grandchildren: Austin and Blake Colpitts, Chavala and Chetley Wilkins, Declan and Emersyn Candy and Everly Wanamaker;  also his brother Winston (Jessie) Armstrong as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Albert Patterson.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, from 3 to 6pm. A Celebration of Harold’s life will be held from St. Paul’s United Church on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 11:00am. The interment will take place in Roachville Cemetery.
